〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Corvo Attano
CHARACTER AGE: 40
SERIES: Dishonored
CHRONOLOGY: Six months after the end of the game
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Heropa #7
BACKGROUND:
The ongoing and final world states and relationships with various important characters in Dishonored vary with the tactics and decisions made in the game. The focus is on the way actions affect outcomes. For example; a bloodier present contributes to a darker future, whereas a stealthier and less violent approach provides a calmer, more stable outcome. This app uses the low chaos approach, an overview of the events and end result can be found here.
Corvo was born to a lower-class family on the 25th day of the month of nets, in the island nation of Serkonos His father died in a lumber accident when Corvo was very young, and as his mother was too busy trying to keep herself and her son from starvation he grew up undisciplined and angry. He would pick fights on a regular basis, provoking city guards and thugs alike. He grew confident in his skill with a blade after a few years, and when the chance arose, he applied to participate in an annual sword duel festival, if only to win some coin. To his surprise, he was accepted, and despite being untrained and inexperienced in formal combat… he won.
His success earned him an officer ranking in the Grand Guard at the age of 16. His training and skill increased and only two years later he was gifted to the Emperor of the Isles as a show of good will from the Duke of Serkonos. He traveled to the Empire's seat of power in Gristol, in the city of Dunwall. When the Emperor’s daughter, Jessamine, came of age, Corvo was chosen to be her Lord Protector—Her personal bodyguard, tasked with protecting her at all times. Numerous rumours surrounded the relationship between the Empress and her Lord Protector. It was commonly suspected that Corvo was the father of Jessamine’s young daughter Emily.
In the year 1835, a mysterious plague struck Dunwall, carried by rats. Corvo was sent across the Isles in search of aid, leaving his position at Jessamine’s side for the first time since his appointment as Lord Protector. Two years later he returned, only to witness and be framed for the assassination of Empress Jessamine Kaldwin and the kidnapping of her daughter. He was arrested and thrown in jail, tortured for six months in order to confess to a murder he did not commit. When he refused to give a formal confession, recorded for all the city to hear as proof of his guilt, Corvo’s tongue was cut out, to prevent him from speaking out against the Lord Regent and his involvement in the Empress’ murder.
With the aid of a group called the Loyalists, Corvo escaped the day before his execution. That night in his dreams, Corvo was visited by The Outsider, who gifted him with the ability to draw power from the Void to aid him in his attempt to find Emily and place her on the throne.
In the wake of the Empress’ death, her former Spymaster (and the man who ordered her death) had become the Lord Regent, effectively placing himself in the highest position of power. In order to reach him and Emily, numerous others had to be removed from play beforehand.
Despite the easiest path before him, Corvo decided not to let himself fall to the temptation of becoming an assassin—as so many others had been quick to accuse him of being. Instead, he spared his targets, slipping through the city like a shadow with the aid of the Outsider's Mark. He was spotted by no one, and his targets were spared, although most would consider death a kinder alternative to the fates allowed them by the disgraced Lord Protector.
Just when the end was in sight, Corvo was betrayed by those who had aided him. They poisoned him and left him for dead, plotting to use Emily for their own gains. Corvo survived, but barely, and returned only in time to rescue the young Empress—The Loyalists had themselves been betrayed by their leader, poisoned by the same substance that had almost killed Corvo.
Corvo’s choices paved the way to a more stable and calmer Dunwall, allowing Emily a safer return to the throne. She was crowned Empress of the Isles not long after her return, and Corvo was pardoned, all charges against him dropped at the Empress’ request. For six months he remained at her side just as he had her mother, continuing his position as lord Protector. At Emily’s insistence, both she and Corvo learned how to sign, to facilitate communication between the two of them.
PERSONALITY:
Corvo is a quiet man. He communicates only when necessary and prefers companionable silence to idle conversation. He does not ‘speak’ much, often listening instead unless he feels his input is welcome or needed. As a result, he’s become something of a skilled listener. He is a serious individual, although years of living with a young child have softened his attitude and he’s still fond of children. After all, children are less likely to frame him for murder. His position as Lord Protector required him to be alert at all times, ever vigilant and observant of both the Empress’ actions and those of the people around her. He’s developed a bit of a habit of watching the people around him even in times of peace as a result of this.
There is nothing more important to Corvo than those he cares for—he will stop at nothing to keep them safe and happy, even at his own expense. His loyalty and trust, though difficult to earn after being betrayed numerous times, are just as difficult to lose. He takes his position as Protector seriously, and doesn’t just equate it to physical wellbeing. If he can help in any way, he will do his best to do so. He’s observant and methodical, often taking more time than necessary to make sure all his bases have been covered. It’s because of this that he was able to find non-violent (or non-lethal) alternatives to his goals. He abstains from killing on his quest to reinstate Emily to protect her from the aftermath of so much death, knowing that his actions would have a direct influence on not only how she saw him, but how she would treat others after her return.
After the events of dishonored Corvo is suspicious and tense, he doesn’t take well to physical contact of any kind—no matter if he’s warned beforehand or not. His months in prison have left him distrustful of contact, and he dislikes being in close quarters with anyone. His personal space is incredibly important to him. He can be cruel, if angered—months of torture and restraint have made him incredibly creative with his methods of retaliation—he’s never raised his blade to anyone except in self-defence.
POWER:
The Outsider’s Mark – The mark on Corvo’s hand provides him with arcane abilities, listed below.
Dark Vision—An active ability that gives Corvo something akin to x-ray vision (although its use is limited to living beings and technology within a specific radius).
Rat King—Corvo can summon and possess rats. He can choose to either summon one and possess it, or alternatively he can call on an entire swarm of the creatures to attack or provide a distraction. (This power is a combination of two of Corvo’s canon abilities: Devouring Swarm and Possession.)

He feels restless.
It’s been a long day, and the sheer amount of information Corvo has had thrust at him since he stepped out of the Porter has left him feeling overwhelmed and offbalance. His normal coping mechanisms don’t work here—He doesn’t know Heropa, doesn’t know the people or the culture and the lack of knowledge has him drifting awkwardly along with the current.
It’s not until he’s shown to his new home that he notices just how uncomfortable he is. He feels wrong, confined in his own skin. Even his coat feels like an overbearing weight on his shoulders. As soon as he steps into his room he shucks off the coat and throws it on the bed without thinking. The sound of something solid hitting the floor makes him jump.
There’s a bone charm, sitting silent and still on the floor near his coat. Corvo stoops to pick it up, and as his fingers curl around the bone it hits him.
There’s no void. No alternate dimension for Corvo to sense at the edges of his awareness, no constant hum in his ears from the artifacts that still clutter his coat pockets. The silence is deafening to him and he sits down heavily on the edge of his bed, fingers brushing the carving idly as he tries to remember the power that used to warm the bone and the song it used to hum to him.
Corvo doesn’t know how much time has passed but when he looks up from the charm the light has faded. He still feels strange, but the bonecharm in his hand has warmed with the heat from his palm, and he feels settled, calmer than he was.
Despite its powerlessness in this new world, Corvo places the charm under his pillow. It seems it still has some use, after all.
